Morning fog in Picton

I'm glad you could join me on my day out! Its Friday, 9th June 1999. Hamish and Annelise have gone on a school trip to Motuara Island and Ships Cove.
The day got off to a foggy start. The fog had all gone by 10am and it turned out a perfect day.

I spent most of the day in my "office" as I am the secretary for the local cat show.
The kids weren't due back until 4pm. I thought I would leave a little earlier than that and take a few photos around the place.

Mariners Mall in Picton

This is Mariners Mall in Picton. The home of a supermarket and a few specialty shops including NZ Post which is where I need to go to check my mail.

Inside Mariners Mall on a weekday is usually very quiet- the best part about living in a small town.

High Street in Picton towards the Police Station

This is the view up Picton's High Street towards the Police Station, from outside the Mall.

And a view down High Street towards the foreshore.

Oxleys Hotel taken in 1999

The Oxleys Hotel- a notable Picton Landmark which has been mostly demolished since this photo was taken. The frontage is being preserved. There are not many old buildings left in Picton any more- too much of an earthquake risk.

Also an earthquake risk, the Federal Hotel was demolished in 1999. The waterfront just isn't going to be the same without the 3 hotels- Oxley's, Federal and Terminus.

view towards Queen Charlotte Sound from Picton foreshore

While the face of Picton may be changing, here is a view that would be very difficult to improve upon. The Tranquil waters of the Queen Charlotte Sound.

Heading out of Picton for a little while now to another spot favoured by boaties- Waikawa Bay.

Oxleys
Picton and its Oxley Hotel are at a crossroads. Since 1902, the Victorian palazzo-style tavern and hotel has stood on London Quay, a seaside landmark conveying a sense of Old World charm to anyone who has arrived in Picton aboard a ferry. Unfortunately, the charm of the town and the hotel may not survive much longer.

Queen Charlotte Track
The Queen Charlotte Track offers a spectacular trip through the Marlborough Sounds, from the historic Ship Cove through to Anakiwa in the Grove Arm.

Picton Sounds Paradise
Picton - sound like paradise? That's because it is!
The friendliness of this quaint waterfront village, snuggled between the hills and the sea, will bring you back time and time again.
